A dangerous find was discovered on Monday in Giebułtówek, in Lwówek County. A person carrying out earthworks came across an object resembling a shell.
The police were notified about the find. A patrol and an officer with bomb-disposal and pyrotechnics qualifications were sent to the scene.
The police officer examined the object and confirmed that it was an artillery shell, most likely dating from World War II. The officers secured the site where the unexploded ordnance was found, preventing unauthorized people from accessing it.
A bomb-disposal patrol then arrived at the scene. The specialists from Bolesławiec took over the dangerous object.
This is another reminder that, despite more than 80 years having passed since the end of World War II, its dangerous remnants can still be found during earthworks and other work carried out in the field.
The police appeal that if an object resembling a shell, grenade or other ammunition is found, under no circumstances should it be touched, moved or independently secured.
The discovery site should be marked from a safe distance and the emergency services notified by calling 112.
Even after several decades, unexploded ordnance can still pose a real threat to life and health.
