An artillery shell dating from World War II was found in Piechowice. The dangerous object was discovered on September 6 on Turystyczna Street.

Until the Bolesławiec Bomb Disposal Patrol from the 23rd Silesian Artillery Regiment arrived, the site was secured by police officers from Jelenia Góra.

Despite more than 80 years having passed since the end of World War II, such discoveries can still pose a serious threat. Moving, digging up or attempting to defuse a found object on one’s own is particularly dangerous.

Police remind the public that ammunition remnants may be encountered during walks in the forest, earthworks or agricultural work. A shell, grenade or any other object resembling unexploded ordnance should be left where it was found, and people should move to a safe distance.

It must not be touched, moved, dug up or disarmed. The discovery should be reported to the Police as soon as possible.

Even a heavily corroded object may still be dangerous. In the case of unexploded ordnance, appearances can be particularly deceptive—which is why its securing and removal should be carried out exclusively by appropriately trained bomb disposal specialists.
