– Under the applicable regulations, “When driving on a motorway or expressway, a driver is required to maintain a minimum distance between the vehicle they are driving and the vehicle travelling ahead of them in the same lane. This distance, expressed in metres, must be no less than half the number indicating the speed of the vehicle driven by the driver, expressed in km/h” – stresses Staff Sergeant Paweł Noga from the press team of the Lower Silesian Provincial Police Headquarters. – This provision does not apply while overtaking.
The results of the checks? The officers report: – In all cases, the distances between the vehicles were less than half the speed at which they were travelling. In all measurements, the police used a device operating in DBC mode (Distance Between Cars).
The drivers who violated the regulations were issued eight fines totalling PLN 2,400. (The fine prescribed for this road traffic offence ranges from PLN 300 to PLN 500).
The police remind drivers:
The fine is not the most important issue here, but rather the danger posed by drivers who fail to comply with this provision. Sometimes it may simply be too late to react appropriately to a rapidly changing situation on the road. Collisions involving a vehicle crashing into the rear of the vehicle ahead frequently end tragically.
