The Chief Sanitary Inspector was informed via the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) about the withdrawal by the French company Häagen-Dazs of certain batches of vanilla ice cream due to the use in its production of an ingredient contaminated with ethylene oxide—vanilla extract.
GIS explains:
Ethylene oxide is harmful to health; safe levels of consumption of this substance cannot be established.
Therefore, IGLOTEX decided that it was necessary to withdraw the batches that had been placed on the market before the company received information about the contamination.
