Ski jumping

Our list of winter sports begins with ski jumping, particularly popular in Poland and the Scandinavian countries. In ski jumping, competitors aim to achieve the longest possible jump after taking off from the ramp of a specially designed hill. They use skis, muscle power and techniques for utilizing gusts of wind. In addition to jump length, competitors’ style and other factors affect the final result. Ski jumping was first contested in Norway at the end of the 19th century, and later spread throughout Europe and North America at the beginning of the 20th century. Ski jumping has been one of the most popular Olympic winter sports since 1924.

Alpine skiing

Alpine, or downhill, skiing consists of skiing down snowy slopes on skis with specially designed bindings. Whether for recreation or top-level competition, alpine skiing as a winter sport is usually practiced at ski resorts that provide services such as ski lifts, artificial snowmaking and piste grooming. Alpine skiing is one of the most important Olympic winter sports. In total, alpine skiing has five events:

  • downhill
  • slalom
  • giant slalom
  • super-G
  • Combined.

Ice hockey

What winter sports are played by teams consisting of several players? Ice hockey is one of the main examples and is one of the most popular winter sports in the United States, Canada and the Scandinavian countries. Ice hockey is played on a rink approximately 61 m long and 30 m wide. The rink is divided into three main sections. The central section is the neutral zone and includes the center circle, where play resumes after each goal. The attacking and defending zones are located on either side of the neutral zone.

Each team may have a maximum of 20 players. Of these 20, only six may be on the ice at the same time. To score a goal, a player must send the puck past the goal line. For this purpose, any part of the body or a stick may be used, except the hands.

Bobsleigh

Bobsleigh is another winter sport practiced either in teams or individually. Most commonly, teams consist of two or four competitors who race against the clock down narrow, winding, steep and icy tracks in gravity-powered sleds. Bobsleigh speeds quite often reach 150 km/h. It is also one of the three sliding Olympic winter sports, alongside luge and skeleton.

The sleds are made from a combination of steel, fiberglass or carbon fiber. Athletes begin by pushing the sleds for up to 50 meters before the crew members jump aboard. They then travel down the track, with the athlete sitting at the front steering the sled to achieve the fastest possible trajectory.

Curling

Curling is another popular winter sport on our list of the most-watched disciplines in 2022. It is an indoor sport that can be played outside the winter season because artificial ice is used. In curling, players slide a highly polished stone across the ice toward a target area. Known as “chess on ice,” the game requires a great deal of teamwork and a good strategy to determine the right position for the stones in different situations.

Figure skating

Figure skating was the first winter Olympic sport to be included in the schedule of the event, in 1908. What does this popular winter sport in 2022 involve? In figure skating, athletes perform their artistic programs before a panel of judges, who award points for many elements. Figure skating includes both pairs’ events and team competitions. Pairs must consist of one male and one female competitor.

Skeleton

Many people are certainly wondering which winter sports reach the highest speeds. We mentioned bobsleigh earlier, so now it is time for skeleton. This Olympic winter sport is considered by far the fastest sliding discipline, in which participants race down on small sleds while lying on their stomachs with their faces directed toward the ice-covered track.

Skeleton athletes typically experience forces of up to 5 g and reach speeds of more than 130 kilometers per hour. Skeleton got its name from the bony appearance of the sled. This winter sport was first introduced to the Olympic program at the 2002 Winter Games.
