Pečenica, a festival of roast suckling pig, is an event that enjoys great popularity among audiences. It has been held every year for many years in Gościszów, in the Nowogrodziec municipality. Gościszów is inhabited almost entirely by re-emigrants from Yugoslavia. They are descendants of Poles who left Galicia for Bosnia in search of a better life. After the Second World War, they returned to Poland and settled in Lower Silesia. They brought with them traditions and customs that they continue to preserve to this day— a combination of practices originating in Galicia and traditions adopted during their life in Bosnia. One expression of this tradition is Pečenica itself, namely roast suckling pig.

“This dish was prepared only for special occasions, mainly important family celebrations. By organizing this event, we want the Pečenica Festival to play a role similar to that played by celebrations in Bosnia. There, Pečenica was the main attraction of festivities during which entire families gathered. We, in turn, want this festival to unite not only the local community of our municipality, but also residents of other regions of our country, as well as our neighbors from Germany, the Czech Republic and the territories of the former Yugoslavia. During our shared feasting, we want to present our traditions and folklore, as well as learn about the traditions and customs of our neighbors, since folk groups from other regions and countries are invited to the Pečenica Festival. Today, re-emigrants and their descendants, who carefully cultivate their traditions—a combination of Polish and Balkan culture—share their experiences during Pečenica,” the festival organizers say.
