The body of a 48-year-old woman was found at the end of May. It had lain in the house for a month. Her husband, whom she had married six months earlier, lived in the apartment with the deceased woman. Her son, Mateusz Kłak, describes the case in detail:

On May 27, the police found my mother’s body in an apartment on Husarska Street in Świętoszów. Initial findings indicate that my mother had died MORE THAN A MONTH earlier; the condition of the body pointed to this. Her husband, X, was also in the two-room apartment. He had not informed either the family or the authorities of her death. An autopsy will take place on Wednesday. For now, the cause of my mother’s death is unknown, but the last messages the family received read: “I’m afraid of this man.” Today, all messages from my mother have been deleted. X meticulously erased every trace that could point to his guilt.

Despite the fact that X was staying in one small apartment with my mother’s body, he went to the store every day and spoke with the neighbors, living as if nothing had happened. When the family reported her missing to the police and officers went to his apartment, X said that his wife—and my mother—was in the hospital. Yet she had been dead in the next room for more than a month!

Although I can barely bring myself to write this, I have to. I have to because I cannot understand why the police did not detain X?! A moment ago, an attempt was recorded to pay with my mother’s card at one of the restaurants in Świętoszów. Until now, X had been using my mother’s money and withdrawing money on her behalf. Take care of yourselves, because although we do not yet have the autopsy results, no normal person lives with a rotting body for that long.

As Mateusz Kłak told us, the man was taken to a psychiatric hospital in Bolesławiec on Friday, but was released the same day. Mr. Mateusz went to his mother’s apartment on Sunday. There were two phones there, which he searched. It turned out that his stepfather had contacted his own family at the end of April regarding his wife’s death and had written that the funeral had already taken place. The woman’s son informed the police about this discovery. He was told to appear at the police station on Monday. Mr. Mateusz brought the phone and gave a statement. It turned out that no prosecutor or police officer had yet been assigned to the case.

What outrages Mr. Mateusz most is that his stepfather was not even detained for 48 hours and that what had actually happened was not thoroughly investigated. He fears that his mother did not die of natural causes, although he acknowledges that she had been ill.

The police confirm that a woman’s body was found in one of the apartments in Świętoszów. They also confirm that the man who had been staying in the apartment was taken to a specialist hospital. An autopsy is scheduled. Unfortunately, the police do not comment in any way on the man’s release from the hospital, nor do they address the son’s concerns that his mother did not die from an illness.
