For several years, there has been talk of creating a permanent US military base in Poland. The issue gained wide attention as early as 2020, when Poland and the United States signed an agreement on enhanced defense cooperation. The document provided for an increased US military presence in Poland and the development of infrastructure needed by American soldiers.
The locations indicated at the time also included areas very close to Bolesławiec. Świętoszów, Trzebień and Pstrąże were to be prepared for an American armored brigade combat team. Even then, the possibility of stationing several thousand soldiers at these locations was anticipated.
Today, some of these plans have already become reality.
American soldiers are already in Bolesławiec and Świętoszów
Świętoszów is one of the important points of the American military presence in Poland. US Army soldiers arrive there on a rotational basis, use the existing infrastructure and conduct training. American military infrastructure also operates in Trzebień.
The American presence also includes Bolesławiec. US soldiers appear in our city as part of the rotational stationing system for American troops on NATO’s eastern flank.
However, this is still not the permanent base that is currently being discussed.
A permanent base would mean something much larger: the long-term stationing of American units, extensive infrastructure and facilities for soldiers and their families.
Americans inspected potential locations
In September 2026, an American delegation came to Poland to analyze locations that could be used to establish a permanent base.
Just a few days ago, Lower Silesia was identified as one of the most serious options. Money.pl reported that the region’s main locations under consideration are Wrocław and Oleśnica. According to this information, the base could accommodate around 5,000 American soldiers, and the investment would involve expenditures running into billions of złoty.
Wrocław is reportedly attractive, among other reasons, because of its existing infrastructure, transport connections and expanding airport. Oleśnica, meanwhile, has a large site belonging to a former military airfield.
The authorities of Lower Silesia are openly lobbying for the region to be selected. Lower Silesian Marshal Paweł Gancarz argued that Lower Silesia has strong advantages, including good infrastructure, transport connections, educational facilities and the expanding airport in Wrocław.
There has now been a new twist in the matter
New information from Business Insider emerged on September 18. According to the portal’s findings, three voivodeships remain in contention: Lower Silesian, Lubusz and West Pomeranian.
This would mean that Greater Poland, including the previously mentioned Poznań and Powidz, is not currently being considered as the location of the new permanent base.
In the case of West Pomerania, Szczecin has emerged as a possibility. West Pomeranian Voivode Adam Rudawski publicly pointed to the city’s advantages, including its port, the training ground in Drawsko Pomorskie and NATO’s Multinational Corps Northeast headquarters located in Szczecin.
However, this does not mean that it is already known where the base will be built.
Will it be in Wrocław?
As of today, Wrocław is one of the specific locations mentioned in the latest reports, but there is no official confirmation that the base will be built there.
The same applies to Oleśnica. Just a few days ago, both locations were identified by Money.pl as options being considered in Lower Silesia.
At the same time, Business Insider is now reporting more broadly on three voivodeships, leaving the question of the specific location open.
US President Donald Trump said on September 17 that “significant progress” had been made on establishing a base in Poland and that its location would be announced soon.
Bolesławiec and Świętoszów are already on the US military map
Regardless of where the permanent base is ultimately built, Bolesławiec and Świętoszów have been associated with the presence of American troops for several years.
American soldiers are stationed rotationally in Świętoszów, and infrastructure in the region is used by the US Army. The American presence also includes Bolesławiec and Trzebień.
Therefore, a possible decision to establish a permanent base in Lower Silesia would mean a further strengthening of our region’s military role.
We still have to wait for the answer as to whether the permanent base will be established in Wrocław, Oleśnica, elsewhere in Lower Silesia, or in Lubusz or West Pomeranian Voivodeship. One thing is certain: the decision is getting closer.
