We were asked to publicize the matter by our Reader. In an email to the editorial office, the Reader wrote: “During a weekend walk, I noticed a disturbing act of vandalism beside the new A4 motorway, at the second viaduct beyond the Godzieszów interchange, in the direction of Zgorzelec. The torn fence poses a danger to drivers. It looks as though this was an attempt to steal the posts.” The Reader added: “The gap in the fence allows animals to enter the road, which could end tragically for a driver.”
On Monday, April 19, we notified the Wrocław branch of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways about the incident. On April 22, road workers repaired the fence and embedded it in the ground. “Unfortunately, this is not the only case of theft of fencing and posts. In mid-April, 150 m of snow fence and 130 wooden posts were stolen, and approximately one month after the motorway was opened to traffic, 20 fence posts were stolen. In both cases, we reported the incidents to the police, but the perpetrators were not caught,” says Joanna Wąsiel, a GDDKiA spokesperson. “Our services patrol the motorway twice a day. During one such patrol, we managed to scare off a potential thief who was about to cut through the fence.”
“It is difficult to prevent such situations. We cannot monitor every kilometre of the motorway 24 hours a day,” the spokesperson explains. “That is why we are asking drivers for help. If anyone witnessed such an incident, please let us know. Wrocław has a 24-hour Road Information Point, where incidents of this kind can be reported. The telephone number is 071 334 73 03.”
