It appears that someone has made it their goal to destroy the swans’ nest and prevent the swans from hatching their cygnets. On 11 April, we reported on a destroyed swan nest. At that time, one of the eggs had been smashed and the other two had been thrown into the water.
After this incident, the swans moved to the other side of the pond and decided to finish laying their eggs there (a female swan usually lays between 5 and 9 eggs). Since the swans had once again chosen a spot close to the pond’s fence, on Monday, 18 April, Klekusiowo staff fenced them off from passers-by with netting once again. This is necessary to provide the birds with peace and quiet from passers-by, who keep looking in there.
Unfortunately, once again someone has been found whose apparent aim is to destroy the nest. On Tuesday morning, a reader walking past the pond saw an egg smashed on the pavement. The swans themselves, meanwhile, were outside the nest. It is difficult to imagine that some animal could have done this—carried the egg outside the nest, smashed it and left it there... Therefore, in this case, as in the previous one, it comes to mind that a person did it.
It appears that the only safe place for the nest and eggs on the pond is the island. To encourage the pair of swans to use it, Klekusiowo staff installed a special footbridge. Thanks to it, the birds can get there more easily. However, whether they use it depends solely on them. So far, they have chosen spots around the pond.
Perhaps a camera, for which a collection is currently underway and which Klekusiowo plans to install by the municipal pond, will help improve the safety of the Bolesławiec swans’ nest.
Taking this opportunity, we once again ask you to NOT FEED THE BIRDS BREAD. Bread harms their digestive system and can contribute to the development of a disease called angel wing. Healthy food for birds is available in the duck food dispenser located by the pond’s fence.
