Mariusz Błaszczak, Minister of National Defence:
Now it is time for negotiations. We are convinced that this transaction will be completed within a short period of time and that the tanks will be delivered to the Polish Armed Forces as soon as possible. These are the most modern tanks in the world, which will significantly strengthen the potential of the Polish Armed Forces.
On 5 March, the US Congress approved the sale of Abrams tanks to Poland. This is the final step before signing the agreement to purchase the equipment.
In July 2021, a decision was made to purchase Abrams tanks for the Polish Armed Forces. Along with the third-generation Abrams M1A2 SEPv3 tanks, Poland will also receive a logistics and training package. Simulators will also be purchased. Conditions for supporting the tanks’ operation will be created at military repair facilities.
Where will the Abrams tanks be deployed?
The tanks will be sent to units stationed in eastern Poland, on NATO’s eastern flank. The head of the Ministry of National Defence:
The tanks will be sent east in order to deter a potential aggressor. We all know what is happening beyond our eastern border. The Polish Armed Forces must be equipped with the most modern equipment so that what is happening to Ukraine does not happen to Poland, and so that an aggressor knows that if it attacks Poland, it will meet with a firm response.
It is worth adding that recently an agreement was signed concerning a partner in the construction of ships for the Navy. (As M. Błaszczak revealed, the partner is British.) This year, the first Patriot batteries and Bayraktar attack drones will be delivered to the Polish Armed Forces.
Is Poland safe?
Minister M. Błaszczak: “We must remember that we are in NATO. However, we must also remember that we will not receive support if we do not fight for our freedom ourselves. This can be seen in the example of the Ukrainians, who are bravely defending themselves against the Russian invasion, and this is precisely why they are receiving support from the entire free world.”
He added: “But let us remember that the fundamental condition is the will to resist—the willingness of a given country to defend its independence.”
