A petition has been submitted to the Lower Silesian Voivodeship Conservator of Historic Monuments calling for the Lower Silesian section of the A4 motorway—and, more precisely, the section from the Krzywa interchange to the Wrocław exit—to be placed under strict heritage protection. The author of the petition is a resident of the Legnickie Pole municipality, who believes that it is necessary to remember the purpose for which the road was built, who built it and when (in the 1930s), as well as how many people died during the works.
What if the A4 became a historic monument?
If the conservator of historic monuments approved the petition, the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways would no longer be able to expand the existing infrastructure, and the motorway itself would have to follow a different route. According to the author of the aforementioned document, everyone would benefit from this: both local governments and businesses.
What is more, Lower Silesian residents would gain a new, very good road, while the current A4 would presumably become a voivodeship road and, consequently, would be toll-free.
The conservator of historic monuments will now examine the issue. The conservator acknowledges that the A4 motorway is indeed a historic element of the infrastructure and that some of its structures have already been entered into the register of historic monuments (several viaducts and two petrol stations). However, the conservator immediately points out that in this case it is necessary to consider not only the preservation of cultural heritage, but also the public interest and strategic issues, such as maintaining transport connectivity at the national level.
The petition is to be considered within three months. If the office’s response is negative, the author of the document will appeal to the General Conservator of Historic Monuments and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
