In accordance with the applicable regulations, engineering structures are fitted with barriers—higher than standard ones—to prevent vehicles from leaving the edge of the structure and to prevent people from falling from a height. General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways:
A safety barrier installed along national roads is most often 75 cm high. On engineering structures, however, it is 110 cm high. GDDKiA also installs steel-mesh safeguards to secure the spaces between adjacent decks of the spans of bridge structures.
Road workers emphasise:
We began securing the openings by installing warning signs about the risk of falling from a height.
Ultimately, 146 structures (with a total length of approximately 12 km) are to be secured on the national roads of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. In 2021, the road authority installed mesh on 25 structures, including the S8 expressway and the A4 motorway.
They add:
The remaining openings between engineering structures, located, among other places, on the S5 expressway and the Wrocław Motorway Bypass, will be secured successively by 2023.
