Despite falling oil prices on global exchanges, the strengthening of the zloty against the dollar and announcements of an excise-duty reduction, price cuts at petrol stations are barely noticeable. However, when the opposite happens—oil prices rise on global exchanges and the zloty weakens—prices at petrol stations immediately go up.
In mid-December, 95-octane petrol became a few groszy cheaper at most petrol stations in Bolesławiec. Its price fell slightly below PLN 6 per litre. Diesel, meanwhile, still costs more than PLN 6 per litre.
Average retail fuel prices in Poland, data from 17 December 2021 , according to Polska Izba Paliw Płynnych:
- 95-octane petrol – PLN 5.94
- Diesel – PLN 5.96
- LPG – PLN 3.35
According to PKN Orlen CEO Daniel Obajtek's announcement, fuel prices should be approximately 30 groszy per litre lower after 20 December. The company is expected to reduce its prices. Obajtek hopes that competitors will also respond by lowering prices at their stations following price cuts at PKN Orlen stations.
Will that happen? We will have to wait and see.
