On Tuesday, 26 January, the Youth Cultural Centre in Bolesławiec hosted a group of students from the Special Educational and Care Centre in Lubań. “This is our first visit to the MDK,” says Irena Czajkowska, a teacher at the Special Educational and Care Centre. “And we hope it will not be the last.”

“I used to visit Lubań often. That is where I met several people working at the Special Educational and Care Centre,” says Marek Łętowski, head of the Youth Cultural Centre. “Once I became the director of the MDK, I suggested that the students from the Centre come to us.”

The Youth Cultural Centre has been cooperating with the District Complex of Schools and Special Institutions in Bolesławiec for years. “This cooperation brings many benefits to both them and us. For an educator, working with such children is a new experience and a challenge,” says Marek Łętowski. “But it is worth taking on this effort. I have the impression that the visit was a major experience for the students from the Lubań centre.”

The students from the Special Educational and Care Centre took part in art, model-making and dance classes. “I am interested in the therapeutic role of art and I really enjoy working with young people,” says Hanna Białas from the MDK art studio. “Some of these children have enormous potential and a very well-developed imagination.”

That day, the students from Lubań also had the opportunity to build model aeroplanes and practise on a flight simulator. “I tried to conduct the classes in a way that would interest these young people,” says Jan Aljanowicz, an MDK teacher. “I managed to interest 11 people with varying degrees of disability.”

“It is not that we do not hold this type of class at our school,” notes Irena Czajkowska. “But here, in Bolesławiec, our students had the opportunity to meet new teachers. And they tried to perform as well as possible.”

“I hope that cooperation between our centre and the MDK will continue to develop,” says Izabela Nowicka, a teacher at the Special Educational and Care Centre. “We are open to cooperation. I would like these children to come to us once a quarter. Or even more often,” adds Marek Łętowski.
