The project has been carried out since 2018 jointly with Museum der Westlausitz in Kamenz and Muzeum Łużyckie in Zgorzelec. Thanks to this cooperation, the museums developed and implemented interdisciplinary cross-border educational programmes in the natural, technical and exact sciences, using their exhibitions and collections. The museum in Bolesławiec prepared and permanently added to its museum-lesson programme eight programmes in the natural sciences. Their subjects are linked to topics presented in the permanent exhibitions showcasing the archaeological collections of the Bolesławiec region and the history of local pharmacy, displayed in the Department of City History at 14 Kutuzowa Street.

The programmes, addressed to primary-school pupils, were developed in cooperation with teachers from Bolesławiec schools: Małgorzata Lisiecka (Primary School No. 1), Iwona Burdziłowska-Gordzicz and Iwona Masłowska (Primary School No. 4), and Dorota Startek (I LO). Each programme lasts 60–70 minutes and consists of a theoretical section, during which pupils receive information supplementing the compulsory school curriculum, and a practical section, allowing them to consolidate their acquired knowledge through various workshops and experiments. Despite the difficulties caused by the COVID-19 epidemic, nearly 4,000 pupils from schools in Bolesławiec and the Bolesławiec region took part in the museum classes conducted during the project. Museum lessons will also continue after the project ends. During classes held in the archaeological exhibition, visitors can learn what ceramics are and how they are made, what archaeological research involves, and what properties copper and its alloys have, as well as mint a commemorative coin themselves. In the pharmacy interior, workshops are held on making soaps, candles and scented sachets, through which children learn the basics of traditional herbal medicine. Participants can also learn about the many functions pharmacies once performed, what botany is and how it relates to pharmacy, and discover various plants, their properties, and ways of using them in herbal medicine and cosmetics. In this way, by visiting the Department of City History at the Bolesławiec museum, visitors can learn not only about the history of Bolesławiec and its surroundings, but also deepen their knowledge of the natural sciences and discover the secrets and curiosities of botany, biology, chemistry, geography and physics.

The “Science as an Adventure” project was co-financed by the European Union from the European Regional Development Fund under the INTERREG V-A Poland-Saxony 2014–2020 programme.
