In a park in Bolesławiec, near the District Court building, an exotic tree is growing that draws the attention of passers-by with its unusual appearance. What kind of tree is it? As we have determined, it is a frost-resistant palm from the Trachycarpus genus.
Plants from the Trachycarpus genus are frost-resistant, which means they can grow in countries with a temperate climate. However, they require certain protective measures. Before winter, the Bolesławiec tree will be removed from the park and returned there in spring.
As we read in Wikipedia:
Trachycarpus (Trachycarpus H. Wendl.) is a genus of plants belonging to the palm family (Arecaceae). It includes nine species of plants growing wild in China and the Himalayas, sometimes at high elevations.
Ornamental plants: because of their frost resistance, Trachycarpus palms are popular ornamental plants in European countries with mild climates. This genus has become established in Western Europe and even in some regions of the Scandinavian countries: Denmark, Norway and Sweden. In Poland, these palms can be grown outdoors provided they receive adequate winter protection, with particular attention to supplementary heating.
