During the May session of the Bolesławiec City Council, Law and Justice councillor Bogdan Biernat asked Mayor Piotr Roman whether there had been any developments concerning the square between “Mechanik” and Zgorzelecka Street. (As is well known, the square located at Zgorzelecka, Łokietka and Górne Młyny streets in Bolesławiec, sometimes called Bolesławiec’s Bermuda Triangle, has been an eyesore in the city centre for many years.)

Piotr Roman:

A first-instance court case is under way. It was brought by us, by the Municipal Municipality. It concerns clarifying the issue of payment of contractual penalties.

He added:

The issue of paying this penalty requires clarification; we must have a court ruling because if I decided today to waive these contractual penalties, I could be accused—as I once was—of exceeding my powers or exposing the municipality to significant financial loss.

He also noted:

We continue to emphasise our willingness to reach an agreement. One court mediation session has already been held with the assistance of a professional mediator. The mediation brought the positions closer, but not as close as the mediator had hoped. We now have a signal from the other side that they want to return to mediation. If they do return to mediation, we hope that we will reach a compromise.

What could be built there?

Mayor: – As far as I know, the company intends to sell the site to someone who, in agreement with Spectrum, would build a residential and commercial centre. The plan is for 160–200 apartments with shops or service premises on the ground floor.

He concluded:

I am optimistic. I hope that the square can finally be developed so that some attractive buildings appear there, rather than those concrete kiosks with rubber boots that frighten residents. Not to mention the pseudo-bus station. This is probably the most serious problem in our city.
