On Tuesday (May 4), we reported on the swan sitting on her eggs by the municipal pond in Bolesławiec and on passers-by who look over the barrier into the nest.

We also informed the Bolesławiec City Office about the matter. On Wednesday, May 5, the site was secured. The nest is now covered with a special screen.

On behalf of our readers and ourselves, we thank the office for its swift response.

As we read on Wikipedia:

Mute swans build floating nests in reeds, less often on land or in other hard-to-reach places. The base consists of branches and thicker stalks, the top of delicate leaves of reeds and rushes, while the inside is lined with fine material and large down feathers. The male brings the building material in his beak and hands it to the female, who arranges it properly

The female raises one brood per year, laying 5 to 9 eggs (tame swans up to 12) in April or May.

The eggs are incubated for approximately 35 days, mainly by the female, while the male usually stays nearby, defending the nest if necessary and replacing the female for short periods. The chicks are nidifugous; both the male and female care for them.

They become capable of flight after approximately 4–5 months. Although two- and three-year-old young birds already attempt to build nests, they reach maturity no earlier than their third year of life.
