In November, we discussed in our pages who governs Bolesławiec: women or men? During that conversation, we raised the subject of parity on electoral lists, meaning a change to the electoral law and ensuring that women make up no less than 50 percent of electoral lists for the Sejm, the European Parliament, and municipal, county and provincial assembly councils.
If you support such a change, sign the list. Signatures will be collected on Sunday from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Vinci pub in Waryński Park. If anyone would like to collect signatures independently, please contact us at: 0792 177 320.
People wishing to support this initiative must know their PESEL number and be adult citizens of the Republic of Poland. Signatures will be collected only until December 10, 2009 (they must be submitted to the Sejm on December 22). Every signature is worth its weight in gold!
Currently, 80 percent of the Sejm is made up of men, and 92 percent of the Senate. In the Bolesławiec City Council and the Bolesławiec County Council, men account for 80 and 85 percent, respectively.
In many countries, the quota system (parity) that was introduced enabled women to participate in public life. Only by having a real influence on lawmaking can Polish women help improve the quality of life and improve their professional, health and social situation.
