In the film “The Fur Industry’s Bloody Business,” journalist Janusz Schwetner revealed the horrific conditions at the largest fur farm in Poland, but he could not have done so without Stowarzyszenie Otwarte Klatki, which has been fighting for animal welfare for years.
The association has summarized its activities in 2020. What they managed to do for animals in 2020:
- They managed to save 20 animals from the horrors of fur farms and give them safe, loving homes. You can read about some of them on our blog,
- They conducted an investigation at one of the largest mink farms in Europe and the largest in Poland. Our materials prompted debate in the Sejm about fur farming, as a result of which the government announced a draft amendment to the Animal Protection Act,
- They collected over 65,000 signatures for a petition calling for the establishment of an Animal Protection Ombudsman, and received a bill concerning the creation of this institution from the Lewica Parliamentary Club,
- As part of the Fur-Free Shops programme, they obtained a total of 22 declarations from clothing stores, meaning that real fur is beginning to become a thing of the past!
- They began a promising dialogue with the five largest retail chains in Poland about commitments to improve chicken welfare. In eight of Poland’s largest cities, they put up billboards and citylights comparing pandemic restrictions with the situation of chickens raised for meat.
