– The announcement of tenders for preparatory work to widen the Lower Silesian section of the A4 motorway and build the S5 expressway is good news for the region. It shows that the government is fulfilling its promises and implementing ambitious projects – says Minister Michał Dworczyk, Head of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister. – Improving the quality of transport in Lower Silesia is an urgent need, and thanks to these tenders we are moving closer to achieving this goal.

We divided the preparation of the documentation into two separate tender procedures

– After completing the initial studies for the Krzyżowa–Wrocław A4 motorway and the new Sobótka–Bolków S5 expressway, we are proceeding with further work. The announced tender procedures will bring us closer to identifying the most optimal option for constructing or expanding the A4 motorway, which together with the S5 expressway will create a new-quality connection in the east–west transport corridor – said Tomasz Żuchowski, acting General Director of National Roads and Motorways.

GDDKiA:

The first tender concerns the preparation of documentation for the approximately 36-kilometre section of the A4 motorway from the Krzyżowa interchange to the Legnica Południe interchange. As part of the STEŚ-R documentation for this section, options for expanding the A4 motorway along its existing route will be analysed.

The second procedure – due to the mutual impact of the S5 and A4 roads – is being conducted simultaneously for the approximately 80-kilometre A4 section from the Legnica Południe interchange to the Wrocław Wschód/Stary Śleszów interchange and for the approximately 50-kilometre Bolków–Sobótka S5 expressway.

What are the options for constructing/expanding the A4 together with the construction of the S5?

  1. A4 and S5 combination – provides for expansion along the existing route of the A4 motorway from the Legnica Południe interchange to the Wrocław Wschód interchange and the construction of a new S5 expressway. Under this option, the A4 motorway will have two carriageways with three lanes each and a hard shoulder, while the interchanges and engineering structures will be rebuilt. In this option, the S5 expressway will connect with the currently planned S8 expressway at the Olbrachtowice interchange and with the S3 expressway at the Bolków interchange.
  2. A4 and S5 combination – provides for expansion along the existing route of the A4 section from the Legnica Południe interchange to the planned Wichrów interchange. However, on the section from the planned Wichrów interchange to the Stary Śleszów interchange, this option provides for the construction of the A4 motorway in a new corridor. The A4 motorway will have two carriageways with three lanes each and a hard shoulder. In this option, the S5 expressway will connect with the currently planned S8 expressway at the Olbrachtowice interchange and with the S3 expressway at the Bolków interchange.
  3. A4 and S5 combination – provides for expansion along the existing route of the A4 section from the Legnica Południe interchange to the planned Wichrów interchange. However, on the section from the Wichrów interchange to the Stary Śleszów interchange, this option provides for the construction of the A4 motorway in a new corridor. The A4 motorway will have two carriageways with three lanes each and a hard shoulder. In this option, the S5 expressway will connect with the planned A4 motorway at the Mirosławice interchange and with the S3 at the Bolków interchange.

Road officials:

All A4 and S5 options will be designed so that they run as far as possible from built-up areas, while maintaining cross-roads connecting localities. In addition, Options 2 and 3, which provide for the construction of the A4 in a new corridor, will include, among other things, sub-options that completely avoid Natura 2000 areas. During the preparation of the STEŚ-R, information meetings will be organised with the participation of residents of all municipalities through which the A4 and S5 options will run. All possible routes for the A4 and S5 will be presented in detail.

– Lower Silesian Voivodeship is benefiting greatly from road investments. The S3 expressway between Bolków and Lubawka is under construction, the tender for rebuilding the southern carriageway of the A18 motorway is nearing completion, and now we are announcing tenders related to the A4 motorway and the S5 expressway. This is a step towards improving safety on Lower Silesian roads for both transit and local traffic – concludes Minister of Infrastructure Andrzej Adamczyk.
