General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways:

Of the seven bids submitted for the reconstruction of the existing DK18, from the area of the Iłowa interchange to the border of Lubuskie and Lower Silesian voivodeships, the one submitted by Budimex proved to be the most advantageous. The adaptation of approximately 16 km of national road No. 18 to motorway standards was valued at more than PLN 175.1 million.

If no appeals are filed against the selection of the most advantageous bid, we plan to sign the contract with the contractor in the first quarter of 2021. Let us recall that this is the third of four sections of the future A18 from Olszyna to Golnice. A tender is already underway to select the contractor for the reconstruction of the final section, more than 21 km long.

What does the contract include?

Road authorities: “The contractor’s task will be to reconstruct the southern carriageway of national road No. 18 and its surroundings. The project also includes the construction of access roads, reconstruction of the Iłowa interchange, and construction of technical infrastructure and environmental protection facilities, such as animal crossings. The project will be carried out under the ‘Build’ formula.”

“The southern carriageway of national road No. 18 will finally be modernized. This will allow us to proudly call it the A18 motorway: a safe and comfortable road. At present, this road is ironically called ‘Europe’s longest staircase’. We are putting an end to this legacy. Soon, the entire route from the Polish-German border to the Krzyżowa interchange with the A4 motorway will become a road we can all be proud of,” said Infrastructure Minister Andrzej Adamczyk.

“We are consistently implementing the established plan to adapt national road No. 18 to motorway standards. Today, the most advantageous bid was selected for the reconstruction of the penultimate section of the A18. This is another more than 16 kilometres of road that will improve traffic flow and driving comfort,” added Tomasz Żuchowski, head of GDDKiA.

When will the project be completed?

GDDKiA: “The time allocated for carrying out the works, including obtaining the occupancy permit, is 25 months. The time allocated for the works does not include winter periods, lasting from December 16 to March 15 and counted as three months. The works are scheduled for completion in 2023.”

The project is divided into the following implementation sections:

  • from the national border to km 11.86 (more than two kilometres beyond the Żary Zachód interchange towards Wrocław) – under construction, with completion of the works planned for the second half of 2023.
  • from km 11.86 (more than two kilometres beyond the Żary Zachód interchange towards Wrocław) to km 33.76 (nearly four kilometres before the Iłowa interchange) – under construction, with completion of the works planned for the second half of 2022.
  • from km 33.76 (nearly four kilometres before the Iłowa interchange) to the border of Lubuskie and Lower Silesian voivodeships – selection of the most advantageous bid.
  • border of Lubuskie and Lower Silesian voivodeships – Golnice interchange (more than 21 km) – tender procedure underway.
