An aerial bomb of Soviet manufacture, probably dating from the Second World War, was found at a construction site on the grounds of the Border Guard Centre in Luban. Sappers from Bolesławiec were called to the scene. The bomb has two fuzes, weighs 100 kg and may contain approximately 50 kg of explosive material.
Such a large piece of unexploded ordnance poses a danger within a radius of up to 1,000 metres around the discovery. Since, among other facilities, a hospital is located near where the unexploded ordnance was found, the sappers will try to reduce the evacuation zone to a radius of 300 metres. This decision was made following a request from the Lubań municipal authorities.
The explosive material will be neutralised where it was found. However, this requires time and work connected, among other things, with constructing a kind of sarcophagus around the unexploded ordnance. Under such conditions, the work involved in neutralising the 100 kg aerial bomb is highly complicated and time-consuming and requires the involvement of many people. It may take up to two weeks.
