UMWD:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Joining the doctors’ appeal, we encourage people who have had a coronavirus infection to donate plasma at Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centres. Plasma therapy helps treat patients with COVID-19. The antibodies contained in plasma, which neutralize SARS-CoV-2, eliminate it from the sick person’s body after transfusion. Each donor can donate plasma several times, provided the required intervals are observed. Plasma collected during one visit to a Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre can save as many as 3 people!
“Let us remember that one of the most effective tools in the fight against coronavirus is in our hands. It is convalescent plasma. In this way, people who have had COVID-19 can save another person’s life and health. I encourage everyone who has overcome the disease to donate plasma. Supporting one another, as well as maintaining social distancing and hygiene rules, will help limit the spread of the pandemic,” says Cezary Przybylski, Marshal of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship.
“In this difficult time of the pandemic, words such as help, cooperation and solidarity take on particular significance. Each of us has a role to play in the fight against the epidemic. Donating plasma is one such opportunity. I have already done so. I strongly encourage all convalescents to give a small part of themselves to other sick people in need. This is extremely important today,” adds Deputy Marshal Marcin Krzyżanowski.

Who can donate plasma?
Plasma may be collected from people who:
- are aged 18–65 and have had a SARS-CoV-2 infection
- after recovery, have waited at least 28 days since their symptoms subsided or 18 days since the end of isolation
- meet the basic qualification criteria for blood donors set out in the Regulation of the Minister of Health of 11 September 2017 on the conditions for collecting blood from prospective blood donors and blood donors (Journal of Laws of 2017, item 1741).
How is plasma collected?
- Plasma is collected using plasmapheresis. During plasmapheresis, blood is collected and separated into plasma and the remaining components, which are transfused back into the same vein. Plasma donation is painless, completely safe and takes 30 to 40 minutes. No more than 750 ml of plasma is collected at one time.
- If collecting plasma by plasmapheresis is not possible, 450 ml of whole blood is collected, from which approximately 220–230 ml of plasma is obtained.
