As reported on the State Forests website, a 43-year-old man who set fire to forests several times in May this year in the Piotrków Forest District in Łódź Voivodeship was sentenced on September 14 to two years and four months in prison without suspension. The court found him guilty of arson and insulting police officers. The convicted man must also cover the court costs.
Piotrków Forest District on the arsonist’s capture:
The fire caused by the man on May 18 destroyed forest in the Żarnowica forest range in the Piotrków Forest District. It broke out right next to the road leading from Lubiaszów to Golesze Duże. A 15-year-old pine plantation was burning beside the public road, and the fire destroyed the forest undergrowth.
Although the fire was quickly brought under control, after several dozen minutes it was noticed that the pine plantation had caught fire again 150 metres away. The Piotrków police duty officer also received a report of a forest fire in Golesze Parcela. Police officers and Forest Guard personnel already knew that arson had occurred. Piotrków firefighters from the State Fire Service also joined the firefighting operation. Using a drone, foresters checked the surrounding area to see whether another fire would be started.
About 300 metres farther on, another plume of smoke and a fleeing figure were spotted. Shortly afterward, the man was in the hands of the police and was then taken into police custody. The 43-year-old had nearly 3 per mille of alcohol in his system. He was charged with causing a fire and insulting police officers. At the prosecutor’s request, the court then ordered three months of pre-trial detention for the arsonist.
The foresters add:
The foresters thank the witnesses to the incident, the firefighters from KRSG OSP Lubiaszów, PSP Piotrków and the police officers from the Wolbórz Police Station for helping to apprehend the arsonist and bring the suspect before the law.
