Which polystyrene is best for insulating a house?

The basic thermal insulation material with which we can insulate a house is polystyrene. The most important component of the Termo Organika Complete Insulation System is the “FASADA” range of polystyrene boards, available in as many as seven variants differing in insulation properties and mechanical parameters, as shown in the graphic.

What should you consider when choosing material for insulating walls?

Thermal insulation is the most important factor. The parameter that must be checked when choosing insulation materials is λ (lambda), or the thermal conductivity coefficient. In recent years, graphite TERMONIUM PLUS facade polystyrene has become particularly popular; its thermal conductivity coefficient (lambda) is 0.031 W/mK. The lower the lambda coefficient, the better the insulation properties of the polystyrene boards and, consequently, the better the building’s thermal protection even with thinner boards. For example, a 20 cm-thick insulation layer made of TERMONIUM PLUS facade boards protects a building’s walls as effectively as a 28 cm-thick layer of ordinary polystyrene with a lambda of 0.045 W/mK. In the case of polystyrene, tensile strength (TR) is also an important parameter. The minimum level is 80 kPa. Material with a poorer TR tensile-strength rating may tear under a considerably lower force and consequently detach from the wall.

Which adhesive should you choose for polystyrene?

Polystyrene alone will not “hold” to the wall surface, which is why appropriately formulated types of adhesive are used to install polystyrene boards and permanently fix the insulation.

Adhesives for fixing thermal insulation:

  • TO-KS adhesive for bonding polystyrene boards
  • TO-KPS polyurethane adhesive for bonding polystyrene boards

Installing polystyrene onto an external wall surface with adhesive is one of the very important insulation-work activities. However, the second, equally important stage of carrying out insulation work with adhesive is reinforcing the façade using fibreglass mesh embedded in a several-millimetre-thick layer of universal adhesive. Adhesives for embedding mesh additionally contain dispersed reinforcement in the form of polypropylene fibres that strengthen the entire insulation system. Universal adhesive can be used for two tasks: bonding polystyrene to the wall being insulated and embedding the mesh, that is, creating a layer reinforced with fibreglass mesh.

Universal adhesives:

  • TO-KU universal adhesive for bonding polystyrene and embedding reinforcing mesh
  • TO-KUB white universal adhesive for bonding polystyrene and embedding reinforcing mesh

What types of render are available on the market?

Render is the final layer of the façade, so it must be attractive, as well as strong, durable and resistant to algae, algal growth and moss. It should not get dirty. In practice, no render is completely resistant to dirt, just as no other part of a building is—the best example is window glass. Sooner or later, it gradually becomes dirty. Particular attention should be paid to the types of render. Customers can choose acrylic render, mineral render, silicone render and numerous hybrids, such as silicone-acrylic render or silicone-silicate render.

Which render should be chosen for polystyrene?

If the insulation is made of polystyrene insulation boards, the choice of render is unlimited. The building’s location is also important—for example, whether it stands near bodies of water, trees, busy streets, and so on.

The best solution currently available is GOLD TO-TSG silicone render. It has an important self-cleaning property, which makes it more difficult for dirt to adhere to it because rain washes its surface. Such renders are especially worth using in areas with heavy traffic, near trees and tall shrubs, and in the vicinity of bodies of water, where air humidity may be higher. Silicone render will retain its qualities for longer.

The Complete Insulation System: the Best Way to Insulate Walls

For external walls, the best proven way to reduce heat loss is to use a complete insulation system from a single manufacturer. Properly executed work using the highest-quality wall-insulation materials will provide effective, durable thermal protection for building walls against cooling. A complete system also guarantees compatibility between its individual components, which translates into safe use and the durability and aesthetics of the façade. Termo Organika products, such as polystyrene boards and the complete insulation system, have a Technical Recommendation, making them a reliable choice for years to come.
