Fortunately, neither of them suffered serious bodily injuries and they got out of the car under their own power. However, without waiting for the emergency services to arrive, they left the scene. The woman was detained, while the child remained in the care of the other parent. A sobriety test showed that the 32-year-old had more than 1.5 per mille of alcohol in her system. The woman has already lost her driving licence and will face court proceedings for driving while intoxicated. She faces up to two years in prison and a court-ordered driving ban.

In view of this incident, we appeal to drivers to always be rested and sober when setting out on a journey. If there is any doubt about one’s sobriety, a sobriety test can be carried out at any Police unit, where self-service breathalyzers are available, among other facilities.

We should also react when we see an intoxicated person getting behind the wheel of a car or riding a bicycle. This is our social responsibility. In such a situation, we should take steps to prevent that person from driving, and if this proves impossible, immediately notify the Police.

Let us remember that in this way we can save lives, prevent tragedy and reduce the number of victims of road accidents.
