In the week before the first round of the elections, the incumbent President of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Duda met with the President of the United States, Donald Trump. During the meeting, they discussed, among other things, the issue of American troops, some of whom are to be withdrawn from Germany.
The defence24.pl service:
Donald Trump stated [...], that Poland would bear the costs associated with deploying additional troops: – If we send additional troops, they will pay for it, and we will most likely move these troops from Germany to Poland – Donald Trump said, although it is not known whether he was referring to indirect or direct support for the American presence, or, for example, to Warsaw further increasing its defense spending.
President A. Duda:
President Donald Trump said that if we are generally interested in having more American soldiers here, then we are ready to host American soldiers on our territory.
The President said that the situation is open and assumed that this number could be increased. No specifics were given. This was not that stage of the talks.
And he added:
Above all, we would like these soldiers not to leave Europe. Of course, I will be pleased if they come to Poland, but if they are elsewhere while still guaranteeing security here, I will be pleased about that, because this is very important to me: that NATO’s eastern flank be secure.
