It is now known that the presidential election will not take place this Sunday, which had seemed unlikely anyway. As reported by onet.pl, the two Jarosławs – Kaczyński and Gowin – have reached an agreement on the matter. Their statement reads:
In view of the opposition’s rejection of all constructive proposals enabling this year’s presidential election to be held within the constitutional deadline, the Law and Justice party and Jarosław Gowin’s Agreement party have prepared a solution that will guarantee Poles the opportunity to participate in democratic elections.
After the 10 May 2020 deadline has passed and the Supreme Court is expected to declare the election invalid because it was not held, the Marshal of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland will announce a new presidential election at the earliest possible date.
The matter was commented on TVN24 by the Head of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, Michał Dworczyk:
The pandemic and the opposition’s and local governments’ reckless actions have made it difficult to determine the exact date of the new election. I do not want to speculate; no one can determine it precisely.
