The incident occurred on Sunday, April 5, at a recycling company in Wieża near Gryfów Śląski (Lwówek County). When the firefighters arrived, the fire had already engulfed approximately 100 sq m of the electronic-waste storage area.

The operation lasted 11.5 hours; 23 fire-service units (67 firefighters) took part. Ultimately, approximately 1,700 sq m of the plant, the storage area itself, a warehouse, and 10 ares of nearby forest were burned.

– The probable cause of the fire was a short circuit in a battery – says Senior Captain Andrzej Więdłocha, deputy head of the State Fire Service County Headquarters in Lwówek Śląski. (The battery was among the waste; spontaneous combustion may have occurred while it was being moved).

Was the environment contaminated as a result of the fire? This will be investigated by the Jelenia Góra Environmental Protection Inspectorate.
