– We have obtained an assessment of the perpetrator’s mental health. At present, he is unable to participate in procedural activities and must remain in a psychiatric ward – says prosecutor Lidia Tkaczyszyn, press spokesperson for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Legnica.
The attacker is staying in a secure psychiatric ward. Investigators want to charge the man with attempted murder. (For now, this is impossible because of his mental health.)
Such a crime may carry a sentence of even life imprisonment.
Let us recall. The incident occurred during the night of 24–25 March in an ambulance travelling along the A4 motorway in Legnica County. A patient suspected of having coronavirus attacked a 32-year-old paramedic with a knife: he stabbed him several times.
– The man was being transported by ambulance to a psychiatric hospital. The ambulance had been called because of his abnormal, psychotic behaviour – prosecutor Lidia Tkaczyszyn, press spokesperson for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Legnica, explained yesterday. There is currently no information confirming that the perpetrator was infected with the virus.
The paramedics began to defend themselves and pushed the aggressor out of the ambulance. He then fled. He was arrested after a police pursuit.
The attacked paramedic, a resident of Nowa Ruda (between Wałbrzych and Kłodzko), was taken to a hospital in Bolesławiec with numerous stab wounds to the chest and a collapsed lung. He is isolated. His life is not in danger.
The Medical Rescue Team in Chojnów on the incident:
