PKP PLK:

Another platform—the sixth—has joined the five currently operating platforms at Wrocław Główny. Train traffic will become more efficient, especially as the number of passengers and trains in service continues to grow.

Below are photos from yesterday, taken before the official opening, and from today, presented courtesy of the administrator of the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/WroclawGlowny/:

The 200-metre-long platform will provide passengers with convenient access to trains. It is equipped with shelters, information boards and LED lighting. Train information will be provided by the public address system and electronic displays: four on the platform and two at each entrance to the platform.

Access to the new platform, as to the others, is from the passage leading to the main hall, with an additional entrance from Sucha Street. Passengers with limited mobility and those carrying heavier luggage can use the lift from the side of the tunnel passage. Guidance paths have been marked on the platform surface for people with visual impairments.

A glass shelter has been built above the stairs leading from the tunnel passage to the platform, shielding the stairs and lift. Details referring to the station’s historic character were used in the construction of the platform. These include appropriately selected ceramic tiles—in terms of size and colour—as well as granite elements framing the corners. The design of the metal sections of the platform fencing was also created in an old-style design.

There were challenges in building “number six”

Work on the new platform also required track work, the installation of traffic control equipment and the replacement of a turnout. A challenge during the project was “breaking through” an entrance to the main tunnel passage. A complicated operation was carried out to resolve numerous cable conflicts. These included power cables for lighting, fire alarm, public address and warning-system installations. Because train traffic and station operations had to be maintained, the work required time and design changes.

Platform 6 is adapted to serve all passenger trains. Due to its location next to public transport stops, it will be used mainly for agglomeration trains. Its role will increase after the two renovated routes are reopened in 2021: from Wrocław towards Sobótka and Świdnica, and towards Jelcz Miłoszyce.

Value of the work: PLN 8.4 million. The investment was financed from state-budget funds and funds provided by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A.

The website’s authors add:

In addition, cross-border trains operated by Koleje Dolnośląskie and Polregio are being cancelled. Trains will not run on the Görlitz–Zgorzelec and Forst–Zasieki sections. The same will apply to connections with the Czech Republic—trains will not run on the Harrachov–Szklarska Poręba and Lichkov–Międzylesie sections.
