A fire broke out during the night of March 7–8, after 2:00 a.m., at a gas distribution facility in Świętoszów. Residents of nearby apartment blocks within a 200-metre radius were evacuated. Units from across the county were brought to Świętoszów. Police were also present at the scene.
– We were dealing with a very dangerous situation because there is a very large liquefied-gas tank there; it may have contained more than 30 tonnes of gas – says Brigadier Andrzej Śliwowski, county commander of the State Fire Service in Bolesławiec. – A fire at this type of facility always poses a very serious threat.
Flames appeared near part of the gas installation, at the so-called vaporizer. After the evacuation, the vaporizer was cooled to prevent damage to the installation, and the valves were then closed. The combustion stopped on its own.
Fortunately, no one was injured. The firefighters’ operation ended at around 8:00 a.m.
