The incident occurred on February 21 at 6:23 a.m. at the intersection of Wrocławska Street and Libana Street in Legnica. The driver of an Opel Vectra hit a woman who was crossing the marked pedestrian crossing against a red light. After hitting the pedestrian, the man neither stopped his vehicle nor got out to check whether the woman was unharmed. As if nothing had happened, he drove on.

– An ambulance crew called by witnesses and Legnica traffic police officers arrived at the scene immediately. The woman from Legnica was taken to hospital, while the officers set off in pursuit of the Opel’s driver, says junior warrant officer Jagoda Ekiert of the Municipal Police Headquarters in Legnica. – The entire incident was recorded by the city surveillance cameras. Thanks to the operators’ watchful eyes and Municipal Guard officers, the vehicle’s registration number and the direction in which it was traveling were quickly established. The guards kept the police informed about the Opel’s route and the locations where the wanted vehicle was traveling.

The officers managed to stop the 78-year-old driver. Fortunately, the woman did not suffer any more serious injuries. She was issued a fine.

The man’s driving licence was confiscated, and a request for punishment was submitted to the court. Failure to provide assistance may result in a sentence of up to three years in prison.
