In our town, there are facilities responsible for waste disposal. The problem is that some residents of Bolesławiec prefer to dump waste in the forests. One often hears that there is order in Germany and that such a situation would be unthinkable there. The outrage is justified. Forests are our wealth. We like spending our free time in nature. But not surrounded by heaps of waste!

Why does this happen? We are reluctant to spend money on waste disposal; we prefer to spend it on something more pleasant. And waste can always be dumped in the forest, solving the problem.

Unfortunately, this is the mentality of many Poles. We complain that forests and parks are dirty, but we do not react when we see our neighbour taking waste to the forest at night. Sometimes we do the same ourselves and then explain to ourselves that we cannot afford waste collection—and... leave for an exclusive trip to Egypt.

One can always say: this is not our waste; we will not pay for it. The catch is that we lose twice. The local authorities will clean up the waste, but the cost of removing it will be covered by our taxes. What is more, one day it may turn out that someone has littered our favourite leisure spot.

Below we present a video recorded near the Bolesławiec wastewater treatment plant. The footage was made by members of the Association for Environmental Protection.

The waste has been cleared away. The treatment plant’s owner paid for it. In the heaps of waste, members of the Association discovered gravestones from the municipal cemetery! No comment seems necessary.

The Association appeals to readers: help us fight illegal dumps; let the litterbugs be held responsible for their actions. The poor do not litter!
