Police:
Scammers are constantly modifying their methods and taking advantage of every opportunity to mislead and exploit the trust of unsuspecting people.
They are increasingly impersonating courier companies and sending text messages informing recipients that they need to pay an additional charge for a parcel. The amount is usually very small—around PLN 1.
Someone who frequently receives parcels may not suspect anything. They may even be expecting a delivery at that moment…
The message contains a link that may redirect to a website deceptively similar to the websites of payment operators. There, users may be asked to provide their personal details or payment card information.
The link may also redirect to another fake website, this time supposedly belonging to a bank, where an unsuspecting person enters their login details.
Other scammers send links to applications in their messages that infect phones. These applications may extract passwords for banking apps or redirect text messages, enabling the scammers to break into a bank account. Phones are very often targeted by scammers, mainly because they are much less secure than personal computers.
Last weekend, a resident of Legnica County fell victim to such a scam. He received a text message asking him to pay an additional PLN 1 for a parcel. The man clicked the link attached to the text message and then made a transfer. As it later turned out, not one zloty but almost PLN 18,000 disappeared from his account.
Police appeal for caution:
Above all, do not click links in text messages or emails. If you do, carefully check which website you are on.
Also read messages from supposed operators or couriers carefully. Spending a few seconds checking which transaction you are about to approve may save you from losing money.
