The Lubin traffic police began chasing the driver of a Volkswagen passenger car on Legnicka Street after he failed to stop for a traffic check.
The man fled towards Legnica. The officers activated their lights and siren, signalling for the driver to stop. He did not respond.
While fleeing, he sped along the entire width of the road, forcing other vehicles to brake sharply or change lanes. What is more, while driving, he threw various objects from his car, including bottles, a duvet and a pillow. The police said:
He posed a real threat to the life and health of other road users.
Other patrols from Lubin and Legnica joined the pursuit.
At one point, the thrill-seeking teenager drove into the back of a police car. He tried to push it off the road. Then, at the intersection of Poznańska and Rzeszotarska streets, the fugitive lost control of the vehicle and hit an energy-absorbing barrier, which prevented him from continuing to drive. The 18-year-old, who is well known to the Lubin police because he had been detained several times in connection with other offences, was unharmed.
The young man was arrested. He explained to the officers that he had seen such scenes in American films. He wanted to experience something similar.
The teenager was sober. Even more frighteningly, the “speedster” does not have a driving licence.
He now faces up to five years in prison and even a 15-year driving ban.
