Eight-year-old Amelia has been training in traditional karate for 13 months. She holds a yellow belt and has already taken part in 10 tournaments at various levels. She wins medals—mostly gold and silver—at national and international competitions. On Friday, November 8, Amelia left for a three-day world championship in the Czech Republic.
Amelia’s biological parents were unable to raise her. If not for the care of her aunt and uncle, who created a foster family for her, she probably would not be the brave, calm and open girl she is today. Amelia’s foster family is under the care of the Powiat Family Support Centre. It was the PCPR employees who decided to publicize Amelia’s story in order to prove that a child surrounded by love, even after experiencing trauma, flourishes under attentive care.
“At first, it was very difficult,” admits Agnieszka Sawajda, Amelia’s foster mother. “She was afraid of everything, frightened of punishment and shouting. We involved her in many activities so that she would open up and discover what brought her joy. Amelia loves horses, and we used to take her to the riding stable. Unfortunately, it is an expensive and time-consuming hobby.”
“At first, I wanted to try everything,” says Amelia. “I signed up for every class; all it took was seeing a poster at school. There isn’t enough time for everything. My parents made it a condition that schoolwork came first. If my grades were poor, there would be no karate. I give it my all, and I’m doing better and better. I earned my place at the world championships. I am very grateful to my sensei (coaches—editor’s note), Mrs Beata and Wiesław Olewicz,” the girl adds.
Mrs Agnieszka recalls her daughter’s first medal at the Silesia Cup traditional karate tournament. “That was a breakthrough. Her first competition, and she won silver right away. Amelia became a warrior. She is very stubborn and determined, but in a positive way. She achieves success, can defend herself in case of physical danger, and can also stand up for her rights and feelings.”
Mrs Agnieszka’s husband is an excellent father. The couple had no children before. The man had always dreamed of a daughter—a ballerina. It turned out he would have a daughter who practises karate. Now her father is Amelia’s biggest supporter. He drives her to competitions and to training five times a week. He also waits outside the training room for two hours.
There are more than 130 foster families in Bolesławiec County, caring for approximately 160 children. Foster parents are still needed. Information is available from the Powiat Family Support Centre.
