On Wednesday, October 16, around noon, the duty officer at the Bolesławiec District Police Headquarters received two reports concerning mushroom pickers who had become lost in the forest.
The first report came from a married couple from Jelenia Góra. The couple entered the forest near Kliczków and lost their way. The officers:
The commitment and excellent sense of direction of the police officers from Nowogrodziec made it possible to quickly find the mushroom pickers and take them to the place where they had left their vehicle.
The second intervention concerned a 70-year-old man from Legnica who entered the forest at 7:00 a.m. without a telephone. During the search operation, police determined that the Legnica resident had left the forest in a different place, hitchhiked, and returned home.
What rules should mushroom pickers remember?
- inform your relatives about your trip to the forest, indicate the area where you will be staying and when you plan to return
- take reflective items or flashlights with you; they will make you more visible at night
- keep a mobile phone with you, as it may be useful in emergency situations
- if you take a dog, be sure to keep it on a leash
- do not carry valuables with you
- for safety reasons, do not enter military training grounds, as unexploded ordnance may be present there
- if you take children or elderly people with you, do not let them out of your sight
- remember distinctive features of the area and the numbers on boundary posts; this will help you find your way back more quickly
- if someone gets lost, separates from the group, and remains in the forest for an extended period, they should call the emergency number 112 and, if possible, report where they are—they should look for a granite boundary post; the number shown on the post will allow the location of the missing person to be determined quickly.
The officers:
If the missing person finds their own way, they should immediately notify the Police that they no longer need assistance.
