Polish Police Headquarters:

Although the primary aim of the operation is to care for the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, police officers will pay attention to every behavior that violates the law.

As part of Wednesday’s operation, officers will observe the behavior of car drivers toward pedestrians and cyclists, as well as place under special surveillance locations where the risk of undesirable road incidents is greatest. “Particular attention will be given to pedestrian crossings and cycle crossings located on busy roads, as well as those where accidents involving unprotected road users have occurred,” the officers say.

They add:

We remind you that a vehicle driver approaching a pedestrian crossing should exercise particular caution and give way to a pedestrian on the crossing. Moreover, when turning onto a cross street, the driver is required to give way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway at the intersection onto which the driver is entering.

The principle of exercising particular caution and the obligation to give way to a cyclist on a cycle crossing also apply to a vehicle driver approaching such a crossing. Moreover, when turning onto a cross street, the driver is required to give way to a cyclist traveling straight ahead on the roadway, in a cycle lane, on a cycle path or on another part of the road that the driver intends to leave.

We also appeal to unprotected road users to exercise good judgment on the road and use reflective elements for their own safety, not only outside built-up areas but on all unlit roads, including within built-up areas.

Using reflective elements increases a pedestrian’s or cyclist’s visibility several times, giving a vehicle driver more time to perform an overtaking or braking maneuver. In addition, due to the time of year, the days are becoming shorter. The upcoming change to winter time will also mean that it gets dark earlier. Therefore, especially during the autumn and winter period, you should make sure you are visible on the road.

And they emphasize:

Remember! Partnership on the road and following traffic regulations also increase our safety.
