A Reader wrote to us via Facebook about the social housing building on Jodłowa Street in Nowogrodziec. (In the spring, Gmina Nowogrodziec reported on its website that the first families had received the keys to apartments in the building).
The person who reported the matter told us that one of the tenants “turned it into a den, a shelter for the homeless from Nowogrodziec.” A member of our Reader’s family lives next door.
In the spring, our informant explains, things were still quiet. The problem with drinking binges began in the summer. And, according to the Reader, it is getting worse. On Thursday, September 19, windowpanes were literally smashed in the building. The Nowogrodziec Municipal Police intervened. “There are interventions there all the time,” says the Reader. “The tenants do not sleep because they are afraid. What is happening there is terrifying.”
Our informant emphasizes:
The main issue is that people wait for apartments for years. And she got one, yet she is still destroying it. […] It is one big den. Everyone stays there. Officials come, look around, and do nothing. They should give it to a family that will be happy and respect it. Because there are very many such families in Nowogrodziec.
And the fact that families with children live there. What do the children see? Someone else drunk every day. It is awful.
We asked the Nowogrodziec Municipal Police and the Municipal and Communal Social Welfare Centre for comment on the matter.
Edward Widuch, commander of the Municipal Police in Nowogrodziec:
In response to [...] the question, I inform you that the Municipal Police in Nowogrodziec intervened on Jodłowa Street in Nowogrodziec only on September 19, 2019. The person who smashed the window in the social housing unit was apprehended and handed over to the Police.
Moreover, the Municipal Police provided assistance to employees of the Municipal Social Welfare Centre in Nowogrodziec and the building manager during an inspection of the unit.
Anna Lityńska, head of the Municipal and Communal Social Welfare Centre:
This woman was indeed addicted, but for some time she cooperated both with us and with the County Family Support Centre. Her period of abstinence was long. We felt that it was worth helping her, because one should never write a person off. Nevertheless, she has lost her way recently.
And she adds:
We will want to motivate the woman to continue cooperating, because we have invested in this person. It would be a shame if all of this were wasted. There is no doubt that every effort should be made to resolve this problem.
We still want to help this woman, but for the assistance to be effective, it must be properly accepted by the other party.
