Bolesławiec received the Council of Europe’s Flag of Honour today. It is an important event. However, the most important thing—the flag itself—was not properly checked. It was hung upside down. In a correctly hung flag, the stars are arranged vertically, with one point facing upward. Unfortunately, in Bolesławiec’s market square, the opposite is true. As we know, symbolism is important, and flags cannot be hung just any way, because, for example, instead of the Polish flag, we might end up with the flag of Indonesia.

“The office did not hang it; the military did. If none of the officials noticed, it was overlooked in the excitement of the entire ceremony,” says Agnieszka Gergont, the president’s spokeswoman. The city’s president, Piotr Roman, did not notice either; as far as he is concerned, that is a minus point from us.

The Council of Europe’s Flag of Honour is a distinction awarded to the residents of Bolesławiec in recognition of their achievements to date, international activity and promotion of the idea of European solidarity.
