The incident occurred on national road No. 3 between Lubin and Polkowice. A witness who was driving behind the driver responsible for the collision notified the officers about the incident.
When traffic police officers arrived at the scene, the driver of the passenger car was still sitting behind the wheel of his vehicle. The car was stuck in a ditch, positioned in such a way that it could overturn at any moment. Despite this, the drunk driver kept trying to drive out of the ditch.
The man gave off a strong smell of alcohol. The test showed that he had more than 1.2 per mille of alcohol in his system.
According to the officers' findings, the 40-year-old, while driving on national road No. 3, lost control of the vehicle, hit a road sign and drove into a ditch. Two children, both aged 8, were in the car. A woman who witnessed the entire incident stopped, helped the children get out of the car and looked after them until the officers arrived.
Fortunately, neither the children nor their parent required hospitalization. (The minors were placed in the care of a family member.)
The driver will answer for his actions in court. He already faces up to two years in prison. However, if it is additionally determined that the man exposed his children to a direct risk of loss of life or injury, he could face up to five years behind bars.
Lubin police:
Thank you for your civic-minded conduct, helping the children and informing the police about the entire incident. Such behavior builds a sense of safety at a time when such irresponsible drivers appear on our roads and, through their conduct, endanger other road users.
This proper response deserves special recognition.
