Increasingly often, emergency services undertake operations involving opening apartments at the request of someone who informs them that they have not seen, for example, a neighbour for a long time and are concerned about that person’s health. Over the weekend, during three such interventions reported by family members or a carer, intervention was necessary in two cases, and firefighters gained access to the apartment, for example by entering through a window. In the third case, after gathering information, the police established that the residents had gone on holiday.
What is important is that we do not remain indifferent to the fate of our neighbours. To avoid unjustified interventions, it is a good idea to inform a neighbour about plans involving a prolonged absence.
Neighbourly vigilance also helped save the life of a dog that, while its owners were away, went for a walk along the cornice of a multi-family building on Saturday, 24 August. During an attempt to remove the animal using the ladder basket, it nevertheless chose to return home through an open window.
Furthermore, on Sunday, 25 August, a boat had to be deployed to rescue a young swan. Approximately 10 metres from the shore of the body of water in Bolesławice, a family of swans was spotted. One of them had become entangled in fishing line. Only the firefighters’ quick assistance made it possible to save its life.
In total, 13 people were injured as a result of 22 incidents in the county over the weekend.
In addition to the Bolesławiec firefighters, volunteer firefighters from 12 OSP units and one crew from JRG Lubań also took part in the operations.
