Officers of the Border Guard in Zgorzelec, together with police officers from Lubań, uncovered illegal cigarettes worth approximately PLN 1.3 million. Border Guard officers informed the police that a Peugeot van carrying cigarettes without Polish excise duty markings was driving through the streets of Lubań.

The driver, a 27-year-old from Lubań County, tried to flee from the officers. Without success. He caused a collision with a garbage truck and was overpowered and arrested shortly afterward.

The vehicle contained more than 1.8 million cigarettes worth approximately PLN 1.3 million. The services secured the goods. It was estimated that if the illegal cigarettes had reached the market, the State Treasury would have lost more than PLN 1.6 million.

Border Guard:

The man was charged with committing a fiscal offense. He faces a substantial fine and forfeiture of the goods. He will also be held responsible for failing to stop for a traffic inspection and causing a road collision.

The 27-year-old could face up to five years in prison.
