Beware of fake nephews, grandchildren and cousins, as well as purchases at bargain prices. Even more frighteningly, the fraudsters and thieves operating using the methods mentioned above have also been joined by thugs who pretend to ask for help, a glass of water or medicine.
Criminals also enter homes by posing as employees of housing cooperatives or energy companies. Another method is asking someone to participate in a police operation. Recently, scammers attempted to rob residents of Lubin using the “courier” method, followed by the “CBŚ officer” method. Police: “Let us be sensible, exercise caution and remain vigilant every day; otherwise, we may lose our savings or everything we have accumulated throughout our lives.”
How can you avoid being robbed?
Before opening the door, you should:
- look through the door viewer or out the window
- if you do not know the visitor, ask the purpose of their visit, fasten the security chain (if you decide to open the door), and ask to see their identity document, service ID or identification card. (An honest person will not be offended by such conduct.)
- if in doubt, arrange another date and first check with the estate administration or another appropriate institution whether the person in question is credible
- if the person becomes pushy, immediately call the police or alert those around you.
- in all the cases described, contact the police by calling the emergency number. It is best to provide officers with as many remembered details as possible, such as the stranger’s appearance, the registration number and make of the car they may have arrived in.
