The work will begin with the renovation of the hall in the area of platform 5. The hall’s cladding and protective coverings will be removed. The contractor must safely dismantle the glass, metal and wooden elements. The steel structure will then be sandblasted and protected with an anti-corrosion coating. Once the structure has been painted, new wall and roof elements will be installed. The area will be properly fenced off and marked for the duration of the work.

Importantly, the work will not affect scheduled train services.

Legnica station will be equipped with four lifts to make it easier for passengers to access the platforms. They will be installed opposite the stairs leading from the underpass to platforms 2, 3, 4 and 5. Two main platforms—3 and 4, where passenger services are concentrated—will be reconstructed. New lighting will be installed, and the former signalmen’s posts will be renovated.

The access routes will be equipped with a tactile signage system (so-called tactile paths), making it easier for visually impaired people to reach the trains.

The reconstruction will also cover the main underpass at Legnica station. The facility will gain a more attractive appearance, and new lighting will be installed. Entrances to the lifts will be built in the western wall of the passage, opposite the stairs. As part of the modernisation of platforms 3 and 4, the stairs will be reconstructed and adapted to the new platform height. The original wrought-iron stair railings will be preserved and renovated.

The renovation of the platform hall is a major undertaking. One of the largest structures of this type in the countryL is 120 metres long, nearly 60 metres wide and 20 metres high. The sheet-metal roofing will be replaced, glazing will be restored and new gutters will be installed. The plans also include recreating the roof skylight based on available archival materials.

Because of the station’s historic character, the work required consultation with heritage conservation authorities as early as the design stage. Historic elements will be preserved, while new ones will be added so that they harmonise with the building’s listed character.

The project is being carried out under a design-and-build arrangement. The contractor has so far prepared the design, inspected the sewerage and drainage systems and parts of the installations, and examined the original colour scheme of the hall’s structural elements.

The contract for the project, “Adapting Legnica station to the needs of people with reduced mobility”, is worth approximately PLN 27 million net. The project is financed from the state budget.

The work is scheduled for completion next year, provided no additional activities or arrangements are required, including because of the building’s historic character.
