The District Prosecutor’s Office for Wrocław Śródmieście has filed a motion with the court for the three-month pretrial detention of 56-year-old Zygmunt W., who was arrested. The man is suspected of attempting to murder Ireneusz B., one of Wrocław’s priests, by stabbing the victim in the chest area.
According to the findings, the priest was attacked on Monday, June 10, by Zygmunt W. in front of the entrance to one of Wrocław’s churches. Bystanders provided first aid to the victim and apprehended the perpetrator. An ambulance crew was called to the scene and transported Fr. Ireneusz B. to one of Wrocław’s hospitals.
Prosecutor’s Office:
During an inspection of the scene, carried out with, among others, the prosecutor present, a knife with visible brownish-red stains was secured. It was the weapon used by the perpetrator to stab the victim.
As a result of the incident, Ireneusz B. suffered a puncture wound to the chest that damaged the diaphragm. The injuries impaired the functioning of the victim’s bodily organs and caused a health disorder lasting more than seven days.
The 56-year-old was charged with attempted murder. He confessed and gave an explanation. As reported by onet.pl:
When asked why he attacked, he replied that the reasons were “obvious.”
The court granted the investigators’ motion for W.’s pretrial detention. The knife attacker now faces a sentence of life imprisonment.
