How to get through a heatwave?

  • avoid going outside during the hottest part of the day (10:00–17:00)
  • avoid excessive sun exposure and sunbathing
  • use sunscreen
  • do not leave children, animals or flammable materials in a car
  • wear loose-fitting clothing covering as much of the skin as possible; wear a hat and sunglasses
  • drink plenty of fluids regularly
  • avoid drinks containing alcohol and sugar
  • eat light meals, paying particular attention to the freshness of the ingredients
  • avoid physical exertion
  • take cool showers and baths. (A completely cold shower during hot weather may cause thermal shock)
  • avoid large temperature differences between air-conditioned rooms and cars and the temperature outside
  • close and cover windows during the day
  • stay in the coolest room in the house, especially at night
  • take care of animals. Do not expose them to excessive sunlight, ensure they have unlimited access to drinking water, and ventilate the rooms where they stay
  • monitor your body’s reactions during hot weather. If you feel unwell, consult a doctor.
